Th.A.H. van Harderwijk (1864-1937) Theodorus Arnoldus Hermanus van Harderwijk (18641937) is the youngest son of a Roman Catholic silversmith. Van Harderwijk does not choose the same profession as his father, but wants to become an architect. In 1883, he begins his career on the shop floor as a carpenter. From 1887 to 1890 he works as a first draughtsman in the office of architect E.G. Wentinck. From 1890, Van Harderwijk calls himself an architect. However, his career takes a different turn when, on the advice of his wife, he chooses a career in education and the fixed income associated with it. He begins as a teacher at a vocational school and in later years is promoted to vice principal and director of this school. As part of his directorship, he commissions Jan Duiker to build the Third Craft School in Scheveningen (19291931), for which he himself draws a first sketch design. In addition to his directorship, Van Harderwijk is a member of many associations, including the Union of Directors of Industry Schools and the Association for the Ennoblement of Crafts and the Promotion of Trade Education in the Netherlands. Because of his job in education, Van Harderwijk could hardly manifest himself as an architect. One work of his is the Old Catholic Church in IJmuiden, a hall church in neo-Renaissance style (1888-1890). Note: The oeuvre of Th.A.H. van Harderwijk is not (completely) inventoried.
