L.A. HOOGENSTRAATEN 1913-1993. L.A. Hoogenstraaten was born in Rotterdam in 1913. Originally he wanted to become a painter. After elementary school he attended the technical school (1926-1929), spent a year at the vocational school (1930-1931) and then went to the evening MTS in Rotterdam (1931-1936). Already from the age of fifteen after the vocational school - he worked in practice, alternately as a carpenter, assistant superintendent and draughtsman. He did his studies in the evenings. In 1936 he entered the service of W. van Tijen, where he worked for ten years, initially as a draughtsman and from 1942 as bureau chief. At Van Tijen, he collaborated on all major works between 1936 and 1946. A number of them he worked out from beginning to end, including specifications and budgets (high-rise building Kralingse Plaslaan, Rotterdam; low-rise building Ramlehstraat, Rotterdam; new construction plan Fokker factory, Amsterdam; National Aviation Laboratory; children's colony house, Rockanje; conversion of Van Houten's buildings at Weesp and the emergency stores Jongkindstraat in Rotterdam). According to Hoogenstraaten, that Van Tijen had great confidence in him was evidenced by the fact that in 1938 he received a 5% profit share in addition to his salary. In 1941 Hoogenstraaten enrolled in the HBO course in Amsterdam. At the HBO, J.P.I. Hendriks and H.T. Zwiers were his main teachers. With the latter he graduated in 1946 on a main building for the University of Amsterdam. In 1946 he established himself as an independent architect in Rotterdam. His first works in 1946 consisted of three store conversions, a residential house and a café interior. This was followed by many residential and commercial buildings, particularly in the western part of the country. Architectenbureau L.A. Hoogenstraaten existed until 1975. Besides being a practicing architect, Hoogenstraaten taught at the HBO for architecture and interior design in Rotterdam. Sluijter, Smit's Suikerwerken, fa. Gerlach, fa. van Gilst, fa. Mertens and furniture factory Breedveld, Rotterdam Overschie and Spaanse polder; Offices and business premises V.R.G., Utrecht; a church building for the Seventh Day Adventists, Rotterdam; various interior works, including in the Groothandelsgebouw, Rotterdam.
