J. van den Ban Pzn. Van den Ban was born in Nieuw-Helvoet in 1860. After training at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam, he studied at the Polytechnic School in Delft from 1882 to 1884, where his teachers included E.H. Gugel. In 1885 he entered a competition for the design of a royal palace of the society "Architectura et Amicitia. Van den Ban's entry was awarded a prize. After his studies, he worked for several years at the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg Mij. In 1891, Van den Ban settled in Haarlem. Initially he worked with the architect S. Roog, later he worked independently. Many of Van den Ban's works can be found in Haarlem, Amsterdam and immediate surroundings. These include residential houses and villas, as well as offices, schools stations and stores. In addition to his work as an architect, he was a member of the main board of the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Bouwkunst for many years. Van den Ban died in 1943.
