Owner of N.V. Veendorp's brickworks in Appingedam; bought his first painting in 1925. He would later build up a collection of over 120 paintings, watercolors and drawings by Dutch (Breitner, Gabriel, Isaac and Jozef Israëls, Jongkind, Maris brothers, Roelofs and Charley and Jan Toorop) and French masters (Corot, Daubigny, Rousseau and Vollon) from around the turn of the century and the first decades thereafter (Heijbroek/Wouthuysen 1999, p. 291). The collection is currently on long-term loan to the Groninger Museum.
