The Kolenkit neighborhood in Bos en Lommer is renewing. Houses are being demolished, renovated and newly built. The first new homes will be completed in the spring of 2008. The streetscape is also changing. Over the past twenty-five years, many immigrant families have settled there, and the Kolenkitbuurt remained one of the most child-rich neighborhoods in Amsterdam. But the number of children is declining. Large families are already slowly becoming a thing of the past. As are the vans, piled high every summer with goods for the family in the motherland. To preserve the memory of the Kolenkitbuurt, so familiar to many, the neighborhood, the residents and the vans were photographed and the stories were recorded.
