J.P. Kloos (1905-2008) Jan Piet Kloos was born in Schiedam in 1905. Between 1921 and 1925 he studies at the MTS in Utrecht and continues his education from 1925 in the evenings at the Voortgezet en Hoger Bouwkunst Onderricht in Amsterdam. During the day he works at the office of G.J. Langhout. As draftsman/supervisor he is involved in the construction of J. Duiker's sanatorium 'Zonnestraal' (1927-1928) in Hilversum and falls under the spell of the New Objectivity. After his job as project manager for the construction of Dudok's Pavillon Néerlandais (1927-1939) in the Cité Universitaire in Paris, he opts definitively for functionalism as the guiding principle for his own architecture. Returning from France, he starts his own office in 1932. Before World War II, Kloos mainly carried out commissions for private individuals. Together with architect Gerard Holt, he also submitted a competition design for a new town hall in Amsterdam (1936-1937). One of his larger projects from the pre-war period includes the Rijnlands Lyceum in Wassenaar (1937-1939). During the war, in which the German occupier imposed a civil construction freeze, Kloos taught at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam. After the war, with an extensive oeuvre, he grows into the figurehead of the New Objectivity. Throughout the Netherlands he built hospitals, schools, medical kindergartens, homes for the elderly and housing projects. He built one of the first modernist hospitals in the Netherlands, the Juliana Hospital in Terneuzen (1947-1954). Kloos shows himself to be an ardent advocate of standardization and industrialization. He is one of the founders of the Stichting Architecten Research (1964), which investigates possibilities for combining standardization and industrialization in housing construction with individuality. That mass production need not lead to monotonous buildings, Kloos himself proved with his complex of maisonettes and stores on the Dijkgraafplein in Amsterdam-Osdorp (1963-1972). As a pure New Builder, he looks for the most efficient solution for the access to the stacked maisonettes. To this end, he constructed iconic suspension bridges, which serve as galleries and provide access to four residential floors at a time. Kloos remained active well into old age, not only as a designer, but also within many study committees, standards committees, juries and in education.
