Exhibition review on the exhibition " Nederland bouwt in baksteen" , held at Museum Boymans in Rotterdam. According to the exhibition, brick is a typically Dutch material. The central question in this review is whether building in brick is typically Dutch. Building in natural stone is just as typically Dutch (Van Campen, Vingboons, Roomans). More concretely: Is Kropholler's Mees en Hoop bank building in Rotterdam a better expression of Dutch culture than the Erasmus House? The development of Nieuwe Bouwen in the Netherlands is also considered. A quote: " Feelings of personal aversion to certain novelties in modern society, which simply cannot be stopped, longing for old lost details (the beautifully profiled, heavily measured window and door frames of earlier centuries) lead to a road, which cannot be trodden for long.
