Kho Liang Ie (1927-1975) emigrated from Indonesia to the Netherlands in 1949. From 1950 to 1954 he studies at the Institute for Arts and Crafts Education (IvKNO), later the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He is trained as a modern designer under the tutelage of Hein Salomonson. During his studies, Kho completed an internship at the Goed Wonen Foundation, where he also began working after graduation. From 1956 to 1959, Kho works frequently with graphic designer Wim Crouwel. They design furniture, stands and exhibitions. In 1959, he starts his own agency. From 1960 to 1968, he teaches at the Royal Academy in The Hague, Department of Industrial Design. His international recognition as a designer leads in 1962 to the commission for the interior of Schiphol Airport, in the design of which he involves Dutch industry as much as possible. One of the best of his generation, he not only limited himself to designing furniture, but devised product lines and ranges for manufacturers such as CAR and Artifort, and interfered as a designer with the companies' corporate identity. His designs for Schiphol Airport demonstrate his integrated design vision, in which the architectural requirements of the building merge with furnishings and signage. Kho Liang Ie is significant not only for his designs of new models, but especially for his influence on the (design) policies of several Dutch industries. In the late 1960s, with Nel Verschuren and Tinus van de Kerkhof, he founded bureau Kho Liang Ie Associates, which continues to exist after his death in 1975.
