Metz & Co was a department store, with several departments with their own assortment (Timmer, p. 13), in which exhibitions were also held. And it worked closely with artists, whose designs Metz produced largely in-house (Timmer, p. 9) and galleries, including galleries Krikhaar and Collection d'Art (Algemeen Dagblad, Sept. 26, 1970). The owners of the department store from 1900 to 1973 were Joseph de Leeuw (1872-1944) and his son Hendrik de Leeuw (1908-1978, director from 1950-1973). Among other things, avant-garde products were displayed there for sale (Timmer, p. 9). Metz can be compared to some international department stores and stores with artistic policies (Timmer, p. 12).
