J.B. Bakema Jacob Berend (Jaap) Bakema was born in Groningen in 1914. After studying in Amsterdam and Delft, he was employed by the Public Works Department in Amsterdam and went to work at the Bureau Van Tijen and Maaskant in Rotterdam during World War II. After the war, he worked for some time at the Public Housing Department in Rotterdam. In 1948, he was asked by J.H. van den Broek to co-manage the firm Brinkman & Van de Broek Architects. In 1951, the name of the firm was changed to Architectenbureau Van den Broek & Bakema. The firm left a strong mark on the reconstruction process and was responsible, among other things, for the Lijnbaan in Rotterdam. Van den Broek and Bakema were considered the most prominent champions of Modernism in the Netherlands. During the 1950s and 1960s, their firm grew into one of the largest and most productive offices in the Netherlands with hundreds of employees. Bakema headed this bureau and was also secretary of the CIAM and Team X, editor of the magazine Forum and held several teaching positions. Jaap Bakema died in 1981. Note: the oeuvre of J.B.
